Burning Man
First-timer guide
Read the survival guide early and build a water and waste plan before anything else goes in the car. If it's your first year, expect the gate greeters to invite you into the roll-in-the-dust-and-ring-the-bell ritual that welcomes new burners; you're getting dusty within the hour anyway, so lean into it.
Getting there
The venue is Black Rock City, Black Rock Desert, Nevada. Fly into RNO (Reno-Tahoe) and base yourself around Reno (2.5 hr). Typical timing: last Sunday of August through Labor Day — confirm your edition's exact dates on the official site before booking anything nonrefundable.
Know the scale
You are joining roughly 75,000 participants at an event running on playa since 1990. That number shapes everything first-timers underestimate: entry lines, cell coverage, water station queues, and how long it takes to cross the grounds.
Make an arrival plan
Know where you will enter, where you will meet, how you will get home, and how you will keep your ticket, ID, water, and phone power accessible.
Keep the first list small
Get essentials, weather protection, and a recovery layer right before adding extra gear. A lighter, organized bag is easier to use all day.
