The stages sit at the ocean end of Golden Gate Park, and August is San Francisco's foggiest month. A typical festival day starts grey, clears somewhere around noon, turns windy after 2pm, and goes back under the marine layer at 7 or 8pm — exactly when the headliners play. Afternoons peak in the mid-to-high 60s°F. Nights sit in the mid-50s, and a 15mph westerly takes several more degrees off what that actually feels like.
Do not drive. The festival says so in capital letters: there is no general event parking, and the Richmond and Sunset blocks around the park are permit-only and enforced. Take Muni, or BART to a shuttle, or a rideshare to one of the posted pickup zones several blocks off the park. Second thing nobody tells you: the site is cashless everywhere except Grass Lands, the 21+ area, which still takes cash and has ATMs.
Rules are the final word.
Outside Lands takes clear plastic or vinyl backpacks, non-clear bags up to 6" x 8" x 3", and empty dedicated hydration packs under 2.5L with no more than one extra pocket. Gates open at 11am and the fog usually holds until midday, so the first sets are a sweatshirt situation. When the sun does break through it comes with wind rather than heat, and the UV is strong enough to burn people who never felt warm all day. How cold does Outside Lands actually get?
Colder than the word August suggests. Afternoons reach the mid-to-high 60s°F when the sun wins, nights land in the mid-50s, and the westerly wind off Ocean Beach makes 53°F feel closer to 46°F. Bay Area meteorologist Jan Null, asked about a festival forecast in 2023, called it classic sweatshirts-in-summertime weather and said he had not seen the event run unseasonably warm in its history up to that point.
What bag can I bring to Outside Lands?
Backpacks made of clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC are fine at any size. Non-clear bags, fanny packs, and purses have to fit within 6" x 8" x 3", which is smaller than most people picture, so measure the one you own. Empty dedicated hydration packs are allowed under 2.5L with no more than one additional pocket; a normal backpack with a bladder in it gets turned away.
Can I bring an umbrella to Outside Lands?
No. Umbrellas are on the prohibited list, which matters more here than at most festivals because the evening fog is genuinely wet. The answer is a hooded, wind-resistant shell over your warm layer — something that handles drizzle-grade moisture and 15mph gusts at the same time.
Can I bring water into Outside Lands?
Only in an empty container. Outside liquids are prohibited apart from personal-sized hand sanitizer, so the bottle comes in dry and you fill it at the hydration stations spread across the park. The festival asks people to bring a reusable vessel; it also diverted 89% of its waste from landfill in 2025, so the refill culture there is real.
Is there re-entry at Outside Lands?
No. You scan in once per day and that is your entry. If something serious happens and you have to leave with the intention of coming back, you must find a supervisor at an entrance and get scanned out before you go — handling it afterwards is not an option.
How do I get home from Golden Gate Park after the last set?
Music ends at 10pm and a crowd averaging around 75,000 a day leaves a city park at once, so settle the exit before you need it. Recent editions have run extra N Judah and 5R Fulton service plus a late 5X Fulton express to Civic Center BART, with official coach shuttles from Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and the Cow Palace. Rideshare pickups happen at posted zones a few blocks off the park, not at the gate — check this year's transit page for the exact corners.
