Early August · Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California

What to wear
to Outside Lands

The stages sit at the ocean end of Golden Gate Park, and August is San Francisco's foggiest month. A typical festival day starts grey, clears somewhere around noon, turns windy after 2pm, and goes back under the marine layer at 7 or 8pm — exactly when the headliners play. Afternoons peak in the mid-to-high 60s°F. Nights sit in the mid-50s, and a 15mph westerly takes several more degrees off what that actually feels like.

Daytime

Gates open at 11am and the fog usually holds until midday, so the first sets are a sweatshirt situation. When the sun does break through it comes with wind rather than heat, and the UV is strong enough to burn people who never felt warm all day.

After dark

This is the part first-timers get wrong. The marine layer rolls back over the meadows around 7 or 8pm, the temperature settles into the mid-50s, and you stop moving because the headliner is on. Fleece plus a shell plus a beanie is the standard local answer, and nobody there thinks it looks like overkill.

Your feet decide the weekend

Golden Gate Park meadows hold dew and damp long into the day, and the Polo Field turns dusty in a dry stretch. Closed shoes with real tread; canvas sneakers soak through by the second set and stay wet, because nothing dries in 60°F fog.

The extras that matter here

The bag rules shape the whole kit: a clear pack or something under 6" x 8" x 3", and no umbrella no matter how wet the air gets. Lawn furniture and chairs with legs are prohibited too, so anything you plan to sit on for a long afternoon has to be flat.

Look 01

The Mountain Layerer

GORE-TEX energy from the first set to the boardwalk

Fuji Rock's own fan community calls the style 'Camper Chic' — outdoor-brand practicality with the color and personality turned up — and it earns its keep on the 30- to 45-minute walk from Naeba's main gate out to the Field of Heaven. Shell over fleece, trail shoes with real grip, merino underneath, bucket hat doing quiet work on top. Worthy Farm asks for the same kit for a different reason: not distance, just weather that changes its mind four times before lunch. Golden Gate Park makes it a third case, where the shell is fighting damp wind off the Pacific rather than rain, and the fleece goes on around 7pm and stays on.

Look 02

The Boho Flow

Flares, crochet, and jam-band ease

Rachel Zoe's 2026 festival read for The Zoe Report boiled down to one line: boho keeps winning, and "the trends don't change that much" underneath it. Fair — the seventies flares, long crochet cardigan for the temperature drop, and bodysuit holding it together are the same formula that's worked at Electric Forest for years running. Consistency is the whole point at a forest festival: it works from the first set to the campfire, no update required. It travels to San Francisco intact for a duller reason: covered legs and a heavy knit cardigan are what mid-50s fog actually calls for, and the flares keep wet grass off your ankles.
