The most forgotten
festival items
We analyzed 220 Reddit comments where festival-goers confessed what they forgot, regretted skipping, or were desperately glad they brought — in r/festivals, Reddit’s general festival community, spanning 2012 to 2025. This is what actually gets left behind, ranked by how often it comes up.
The ranking
Mentions across 83 item-identifying comments; percentages are the share of those comments mentioning each category.
What the data says
The headline surprise: the most-regretted item is not gear at all. Snacks and electrolytes top the list, edging out every piece of equipment on the site. It tracks with what the comments actually say — nobody plans for how much a festival body burns, and the moment of regret arrives at 4pm on day one, shaky in a food line that is forty minutes long.
Earplugs at number two is the quiet tragedy of the dataset: the item that costs the least, weighs the least, and protects the only pair of ears you get is the one people most often remember from inside the crowd. Shade, painkillers, and extra socks complete a top five that reads less like a shopping list and more like a list of ways day three punishes day one's optimism.
Further down, the pattern holds: what people forget is rarely the tent or the ticket — it is the small, boring supporting cast (wipes, toilet paper, a blanket, a camp chair) that separates surviving a weekend from enjoying one. Every category on this chart links to a checklist on this site that will not let you forget it.
